The story
Vienna at carnival time, 1899. At the Palais Esterházy, a select society gathers for a glittering masked ball. Amid champagne, waltzes and lavishly decorated halls, old friends, influential figures and people who would rather not have met again cross paths. Behind the masks names stay hidden, but old grievances and secret ties are not so easily concealed.

The host has staged this evening with the greatest care. Before midnight he means to make an important announcement, and the palais is already buzzing with speculation about what it might be. But it never comes to that.
When the masks come off at midnight, the host is found dead in his study. The door was locked, only a few confidants are in the house, and every guest present had a reason to silence him.
The police have been called, but until the investigators arrive no one may leave the palais. Now it's up to you to find out what happened that night. Who can you still trust? Which secrets have to come to light? And who among you wears not only a mask, but the guilt as well?

The suspects

Viktor Sattler, 54
Host
Merchant, host, a true Viennese character. Viktor Sattler has an invitation for everyone, and a reason to invite each of them. Exactly what he does with his guests' fortunes, few people know.

Klara Sattler, 44
Viktor's wife
For eighteen years the perfect hostess. For three weeks the client of a private investigator. Klara Sattler smiles when she has to — and this evening makes it necessary.

Eduard Kern, 52
Merchant
Contacts in Vienna, Budapest, Istanbul. A past he never mentions. Eduard Kern is a man who knows exactly how to leave a room without being noticed.

Felicitas Mayer, 47
Businesswoman
Successful, charming, always near Viktor. Felicitas Mayer calls it a business relationship. What exactly the business is lies right on the table — if you know what to look for.

Henriette Brandt-Haas, 39
Georg's wife
She didn't want to come tonight. That she's here anyway has a single reason — and his name is Viktor Sattler. What happened four years ago must not come out here.

Georg Haas, 46
Engraver
A quiet man with steady hands and a long memory. Georg Haas watches the evening from the second row. The person he's watching is always the same one.

Theodor Brunner, 43
Private investigator
He asks questions and gives no answers. Theodor Brunner is the only one in the room who knows why the others are here — and he isn't saying yet.

Konstanze von Werneck, 31
Eduard's companion
A noble name, empty accounts. Konstanze von Werneck is here tonight for a single reason, and it has nothing to do with Eduard Kern.
